Kenya's Food Security: Role of Advisory Services in Agricultural Sector Modernization

Ensuring food security is one of the key challenges for Kenya, whose economy and population employment depend heavily on agricultural sector. However, despite its strategic role, the sector faces significant challenges. These are climate change, aging and decrease in the number of the farmers, and insufficient level of modern achievements implementation. All these directly threaten food security. The article analyzes organizational structure of agricultural sector, and problems and prospects of the development of agricultural knowledge dissemination services, which are positioned as the most important tool for agriculture modernization, and as a result, strengthening the country's food self-sufficiency. At present their effectiveness is limited by personnel shortage, funding problems, poor relationship between science and practice, and other factors. To overcome these challenges, a set of measures was proposed, including services digitalization, youth involvement, cooperatives strengthening, and legal reforms. The proposed solutions and identified systemic relationships have high potential for their adaptation and scaling in other developing agricultural countries with similar agrarian-oriented economies, which also face the similar challenges. The article highlights that sustainable development of Kenya's agriculture and food security are inextricably linked to the support and reform of advisory services.Downloads
